Ahmedabad: There is water for everyone to drink till 2021. This is according to an Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) plan and might sound reassuring but, experts warn that we might run out of the precious resource if steps like metering water supply, controlling leakage in supply lines and so on are not taken.
With monsoons playing havoc, ground water loaded with harmful salts and bottled water no longer reliable, AMC has charted out a three-pronged contingency plan to keep potable water woes away from city for next ten years.
A senior AMC official says, "Our mission is to use more of surface water, ban use of ground water and providing safe and clean drinking water to people." According to AMC by the year 2021, the city population will increase to 67 lakh and AMC will have a capacity to provide 1,200 million litres per day.
"At present, AMC is providing 143 litre per capita per day (LPCD) in the city and in the coming years it will be in a position to provide 150 LPCD. AMC authorities have been devising plans and projects in advance to deal with any water scarcity problem. However, we are fully prepared to fulfilling the chinking water needs of the city," adds the official. Currently, almost 90 per cent of water provided to the city is sourced from the Narmada. AMC limits have expanded from 190 sq km in 2006 to over 450 square km after the merger of new areas.
