The Supreme Court yesterday discharged Chief incumbent of Welikadawatte Temple, Rajagiriya Ven. Pannala Pannaloka Thera, who was earlier remanded by the Court till September 15, as he had failed to appear before the court on Monday 01, on charges of violating the Supreme Court order on the Noise Pollution.
The Bench comprised Chief Justice Sarath N. Silva PC, and Justice Ms. Shiranee Thilakawardane and Justice Nimal Gamini Amaratunga .
Counsel Uditha Eagalahewa for the Thera gave an undertaking to remove the loudspeakers in the temple premises. He also submitted that he was in no way connected to the events which took place inside the court room last Friday. The Thera writing a letter apologised to the Chief Justice and other Judges.
Police Legal Director SSP Gamini Dissanayake earlier submitted that the Welikada Police had warned the prelate three times not to use loudspeakers before 6 am in the morning, before taking any action but failed to comply with order of the Court.
The court had issued notice on the Thera to appear before the court on September 01. The Court in a rights application issued an interim order directing the IGP to strictly implement the Section 80(1) of the Police Ordinance to control the noise emanated from the loudspeakers until the Community Noise Level Standards are passed by Parliament.
