Non-utilisation of green cess fund in Maharashtra: CAG

MUMBAI: The CAG report has rapped the Maharashtra government for not utilising the green cess fund which is deducted from the sale of electricity by the state government to industrial and commercial consumers. The CAG report said that the Rs 2,315 crores of the proceeds collected by the Maharashtra government on tax on sale of electricity was to be transferred to MEDA between 2007-8 and 2014-15. However, only Rs 112.79 cores was transferred to them and the balance Rs 2,202 crores was neither transferred to MEDA nor utilised for the promotion of the renewable energy sector. "This resulted in a diversion of the fund in violation of statutory provisions," the CAG report said. The principal secretary of the state told the CAG that the unspent balance of the fund was available with the state and would be used for the intended purpose
