Novel step to check tree felling

Women and social workers are drawing inspiration from their age-old traditions to check the depletion of precious forest wealth in the Garhwal and Kumaon Hills of Uttar Pradesh. Garhwal womenfolk, have once again launched a novel movement known as "rakshasutra" (safety thread) . This movement has been gathering momentum has been gathering momentum over the past two years in the Tehri and Uttarkashi districts of Garhwal. In Jangla, Nelang, Karcha, Gartang and Tharali near Gangotri, there is a ban on the felling trees. It was, however, found that about 30,000 cubic metres of timber had been cut in these forests. The women of the area tied safety threads around the trees.
