Himanshu Kaushik & Kevin Antao | TNN Ahmedabad: After caging two leopards, Gandhinagar forest department is now on the prowl hunting for a crocodile. Security staff of Sardar Sarovar Narmada Nigam Ltd spotted one in Narmada canal near Karai in Gandhinagar recently. SSNNL officials wrote to the forest department asking it to catch the crocodile. The department has been told to keep watch in the canal upstream of Sabarmati, says deputy executive engineer JB Shelat. The reptile is reportedly three-four feet long and appears on the bank of the canal. If anyone approaches, it slithers back into the water. Officials said it is near the siphon from where water is released in Sabarmati. He didn't rule out the possibility of the reptile entering Sabarmati. Deputy conservator of forests, Gandhinagar, DT Vasavda admitted that the forest department has received the letter and is taking action. Forest officials have taken a boat trip to scour the canal but haven't spotted the crocodile as yet. "We have left our phone numbers with canal officials and have asked them to inform us immediately if they see the reptile. We can reach the spot in 10 minutes as several officials stay nearby," he added.
