Maharashtra Nav-nirman Sena (MNS) president Raj Thackeray has said that the draft Coastal Management Zone (CMZ) notification would hurt Mumbai and Maharashtra the most if implemented, and has called upon Southern states to unite against the North on the issue. In a news item in today's Loksatta edition, he said the states of the North and their leaders have always had contempt for Maharashtra and, hence, it is necessary for all southern states to join hands, at least for the development of Mumbai. The MNS chief called on all parties in the state to oppose the CMZ notification, saying it would make it almost impossible to develop Mumbai, as well as the koliwadas and gaothans. He added that mere unity among all political parties would not help resolve the issue, as people from the North, "who have not seen the sea," will head the CRZ or the CMZ and get back at the southern states. In order to stop this, it is necessary for all states in the south to join hands and start a campaign against the CMZ, he claimed. Thackeray said that he would seel detailed information on the CMZ and convey his stand to the leaders of the south Indian states. While Goa and Kerala progressed despite the CRZ being in place, north Indians tended to create hurdles in any attempt to develop Maharashtra, he said. If the CZM notification is enforced, the dream of making Mumbai an international city would never be implemented, he forecast.
