Noxious fumes

No one argues that there shouldn't be cars, but automobiles contribute significantly to air pollution. In a study published in 1996 (Slow Murder), the Centre for Science and Environment estimated that 10,000 people died in Delhi in 1995 because of air pollution. This is one death per hour. Deciding on the indigenisation levels for auto companies is one thing, working out an integrated strategy to fight urban air pollution is another. The latter requires policies on fuel quality, engine design, roads, public transport and urban planning, coupled with appropriate fiscal measures. (ediorial)
