NREGS work in private land too

Bangalore, DHNS: Now, NREGS (National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme) beneficiaries can take up works in their private land too... Rural Development and Panchayat Raj department has taken the decision to allow works related to rain water harvesting and afforestation under the scheme in private land. Since the introduction of the scheme (Feb 2005), works were allowed only in the government land. Rural Development and Panchayat Raj Minister Shobha Karandlaje saidbeneficiaries can take up construction of agriculture pond or plant saplings to increase greenery. The minister said the State government has appealed to the Centre to increase daily wage under the scheme to Rs 100 per day. She said there has been a strong opposition to increase in wages under NREGS. Protest Hundreds of people from different parts of the State, on Wednesday, staged a protest in Bangalore demanding the government implement the scheme effectively. Demands of the protesters include increase in wages, immediate distribution of job cards to all eligible candidates and others.
