Nuclear issue: China keeps India guessing

Beijing: Prithviraj Chauhan, the Prime Minister's envoy on nuclear issue, spent an hour with Dai Bingguo, the state councilor and chief political adviser to the Chinese government on Tuesday, trying to sell India's nuclear case. But the Chinese leadership made it apparent that it will keep its cards close to its chest.
They have continued the line that PRC has no objection to any country going for nuclear development as long as non-proliferation concerns were addressed, Chauhan told reporters after meeting Chinese leaders ahead of the August 1 meeting of International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) that will consider India's case.
Beijing has been put in a situation where it may be forced to ignore pleas from Pakistan to oppose India's nuclear plans or actually oppose New Delhi at the IAEA and subsequent meeting of the Nuclear Suppliers Group (NSG). Chinese leaders have reasons not to allow the world know its thinking.
Nirupama Rao, Indian ambassador in Beijing, pointed out that Dai had used a significant phrase while discussing India-China relationship including joint military exercises. She quoted Dai as saying that China wanted to further substantiate the strategic and cooperation partnership with India.
This may seem like a subtle hint, but it is not clear how Beijing will behave if its all-weather friend
