Rejecting the Supreme Court verdict in favour of the nuclear power plant in Kudankulam, the members of the protest committee have decided to continue with their stir. A meeting of community elders and leaders of neighbouring villages will be held on Thursday afternoon to discuss the issue.
On Monday, the SC had endorsed the view of the Madras High Court and allowed the commissioning of the power plant. The order included had 15 directions relating to safety, environmental safeguards and disposal of nuclear waste. It had also ordered the state to withdraw cases against agitators.
However, the protesters said the petition against the plant was not filed by anyone directly linked to their ongoing relay fast that has entered the 630th day. "It was filed by our friends (an environmental organisation Poovulagin Nanbargal), who are, however, not connected to the villagers' agitation. We reject it as anti-people and anti-democracy. That's why we have not approached the court as it serves no purpose other than wasting money," said M Pushparayan, member of the protest committee of People's Movement Against Nuclear Energy (PMANE). The PMANE has convened a meeting on Wednesday.
PMANE convenor, S P Udayakumar, said villagers cannot accept the court verdict. "It was the decision of the public that was final and binding," he said. Meanwhile, the people of Idinthakarai are hoping that their opposition to the plant would become a political issue in wake of general election.
The SC verdict however has buoyed the plant officials who have been stuck at the last phase of commissioning of the first of the two 1,000 mw reactors.
