An international conference seeking to shore up the treaty that is the centrepiece of efforts to curb the spread of nuclear weapons ended in failure, sunk by arguments between Iran, Egypt and the US. The conference on the nuclear non-proliferation treaty, which meets every five years, was unable to make formal progress on efforts to hinder states from withdrawing from the treaty, control nuclear material and technology, and bolster disarmament.
