Number of MDR-TB patients on the rise

A total of 165 people were diagnosed with Multi-Drug Resistance Tuberculosis, the extreme stage of the disease, at Institute of Diseases of the Chest and Hospital at Mohakhali in last eight months. They were diagnosed with MDR-TB since July 2007 after the installation of National Tuberculosis Referral Laboratory at Institute of Diseases of the Chest and Hospital. The lab was established with the technical assistance from University of Endrop, Belgium in June last year. Eighty-eight patients with MDR-TB were detected in 2006 under the government's National Tuberculosis Control Programme by getting the samples tested in Belgium. Asif Mujtaba Iqbal, an associate professor of IDCH, told New Age that a project titled DOTS-Plus Project with financial support from Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria would be launched by this year.
