Reiterating that the Polavaram multi-purpose project of Andhra Pradesh is of no good for Odisha, the State Government on Monday said it does not require water from the dam over river Godavari as offered by the AP Government. Water Resources Secretary SC Mohapatra said Odisha does not require water from the AP project as its water requirement has already been met by the Kolab project. If the State needs water, it can be directly drawn from river Saberi through a mega lift irrigation project, he said. The secretary said this following the AP Government’s offer of five TMC (thousand million cubic feet) water from the Polavaram project. The State Government has already sanctioned the proposed mega lift irrigation project, which could be use it if there is any deficit of water for irrigation, he said. AP Chief Minister N Kiran Reddy had recently stated that Odisha’s loss due to the Polavaram project would be “very small” and the gain “much more”. While Odisha would lose around 2,000 acres of land due to submergence, it would get five TMC water, Reddy had said, adding that to store 5 TMC water 4,000 to 5,000 acres of land and `600 to `700 crore would be required. But Odisha would benefit as the storage would be done in AP, he had argued. Meanwhile, the Odisha Government is yet to take a decision on the proposal of its AP counterpart for settling the issue through discussions. “We have sought some details about the Polavaram project from Andhra Government. We should know what exactly they want to discuss with us,” Mohapatra said. He also pointed out that a case is pending in the Supreme Court in this regard. The Odisha Government has gone to the apex court challenging the `16,000-crore Polavaram project.
