Hyderabad, Sept. 6: In September 2003 the state government issued orders asking district officials to take necessary steps to identify all lands covered by water bodies such as tanks, rivulets, ponds, lakes, river bodies and others, and include them in the Prohibitory Order Book. This was done in order to protect and conserve all wetlands. But to date, no district has taken up the task in the true spirit, resulting in encroachment of water bodies.
In the wake of the controversy surrounding the use of ecologically sensitive areas either for setting up thermal power plants or for allowing encroachments, environmentalists have also found fault with the state government for failing to implement circulars issued earlier on the conservation and protection of wetlands. The government had issued two circulars, one in 2000 and the other in 2003, directing district collectors to remove encroachments in tanks and other water bodies, to conserve and protect them.
