Cooking medium || Say no to trans-fats anjkeep risks at bay If you thought that you had shut the door on trans-fats by eating only at home, you are wrong. The trans-fats have followed you into your kitchen. A recent study by the Centre for Science and Environment (CSE) has found that almost all of the cooking oils in the Indian market contain 10-23 per cent trans-fats. "The levels of trans-fats in all the oils we tested are way above 2 per cent," says Chandra Bhushan, head of CSE's industrial environment unit. Globally, the norm for permissible amounts of trans-fats is 2 per cent or less. Companies cannot be pulled up so long as they mention the amount of trans-fats present in their oils. So, you have brand A that says its oil has 8-55 per cent of trans-fats, and brand B that says it contains 5-23 per cent of trans-fats. So, what can be done about it? "There should be a legislation that forces phasing out of trans-fats from commercial use
