Two separate incidents of fire were reported in Pimpri-Chinchwad on Sunday afternoon. While an explosion in Hibsonfine Chemical Pvt Ltd, Chinchwad MIDC, caused a major fire, injuring one; dry grass caught fire at Pune Bottling Company in Kasarwadi. While the Pimpri fire officials received a call at around 2.30 pm, the other fire was noticed around 3.30 pm. PSI D Karche of the Vallabhnagar police chowki, who rushed to Hibsonfine after the incident said, "Due to the rise in temperature, the thermicoil in one of the research laboratories heated up and caught fire. The chemical elements and the other inflammable materials in the laboratory caused the fire to spread,' he said. "The tin roofs of the sheds nearby were dislodged due to the impact of the explosion and one such shed fell on a worker Sukhdeo Gaikwad (50), causing a serious head injury. He has been admitted to the YCM hospital,' said Karche. Gaikwad was working in New Star Chemical Company, located next to Hibsonfine. The company, which essentially was a chemical research and development unit, belongs to Anil Parshuram Sable (30), a resident of Vallabhanagar. Seven fire engines and water tankers struggled over three hours to extinguish the fire at Hibsonfine, while the Chinchwad station fire was brought quickly under control, without causing much damage. The fire officials said that a chemical reaction between dimethyl amine and phosphoric acid, the chemicals that were in the shed, had accelerated the fire. "The company, which extended to around 800-900 sq feet has almost entirely burnt down,' said Karche.
