Nellore, Oct. 31: The district authorities on Friday alerted the Oil and Natural Gas Commission after noticing fire coming out of a bore drilled in an aqua-culture pond in Mypadu, 30 km away from here. The blaze is emerging around 15 to 20 feet from the ground level and is blue in colour. To the relief of district administration there are no habitations within a radius of 2 km. According to the Nellore revenue divisional officer, Mr M. Venugopal Reddy, fire started coming out from 6 pm in the evening."We have alerted the district fire officer and the fire fighting units are on the way," he told this newspaper at night. "There is no danger as there are no houses nearby."According to the RDO, the owner of the land, Mr Bandi Mallikarjuna Reddy of Mypadu, had used manual equipment to drill the bore about two days ago. He struck water at 97 feet and alerted the Indukurpeta MRO, Mr Changal Rayudu, after noticing that it was yellowish and had an oily smell. The MRO summoned the groundwater department officials and they collected some samples, which reportedly had no smell. However, the entire district administration went on an alert after the farmer informed that flames were emerging from the bore. The district collector, Mr K. Ramgopal, told this correspondent that the area was a marshland and there was the possibility of small deposits of biogenic gases being found in the shallow layers because of decomposition of plant material.
