BHUBANESWAR: President of the Orissa Pradesh Congress Committee (OPCC) KP Singhdeo has requested the Centre to issue a statement assuring the people of the State that there will be no loss for Orissa because of the Polavaram project.
Singhdeo today met Prime Minister Manmohan Singh in Delhi and discussed the Polavaram project. Singhdeo informed the Prime Minister about how BJD is trying to derive political mileage from the issue by discrediting the Congress.
The OPCC president alleged that the BJD was misleading people by alleging that a large number of villages on the Orissa side will be submerged by the project. The environmental clearance given to the project is conditional and it has been assured that Orissa will not be a loser.
Singhdeo handed over a letter signed by him, former chief minister Giridhar Gamang, OPCC working president Chandrasekhar Sahu, former OPCC president Sarat Patnaik, Leader of the Opposition Bhupinder Singh and former minister Niranjan Patnaik on the issue to the Prime Minister. He drew the attention of the Prime Minister to the deteriorating situation in Rayagada district where cholera has claimed many lives.
He demanded Central intervention in the matter as protecting the interests of Scheduled Tribes and Scheduled Castes comes under the purview of the Centre.
He also met Union Health Minister Ghulam Nabi Azad and requested him to rush a specialist medical team and medicines to the cholera-hit southern districts as the State Government has completely failed to control the situation.
