A massive awareness programme, "Operation Clean Ananta' has been launched by the mayor, Mr R. Parasuram, and the municipal commissioner, Mr B. Naga-bhushanam, on Wednesday. A rally was organised to create awareness among people from Sainagar to the district collectorate. As per the decisions taken at a meeting under the chairmanship of the district collector, Mr. N. Sridhar, earlier, the municipal authorities, including the people's representatives, will together ensure that the city is rid of the garbage and streets and lanes have a cleaner look. The municipal authorities plan to distribute two garbage bins to each house for storing dry and wet garbage from May 1, 2008. Presently "Operation Clean Ananta' has been launched on an experimental basis in the Ward Nos. 15,20,21,26,27 and 33 on Wednesday by involving an NGO named "Envirosis.' With the help of the NGO, the municipal corporation will implement the Operation Clean programme by collecting garbage both wet and dry from every house in the six municipal wards of the city. Mr Sridhar mentioned Suryapet as having been adjudged as the best municipality in the state for its cleanliness and beautification programmes and asked the civic staff and the people to take inspiration from the civic body. Several NGOs are also being involved for the beautification of the town. The iron bridge which was closed for traffic for sometime has been thrown open to the public for streamlining the traffic. The municipal authorities are also planning to install water fountains at parks and traffic islands to beautify town. Tree plantation and promotion of greenery are also being taken up in a big way. The roads will be cleared of encroachments by petty vendors and traders. The city will have a new look with new tar roads and several water fountains in the prime localities of the town. Hot mix tar roads will be laid on an urgent basis to improve road conditions. Mr Sridhar has been taking keen interest in the beautification of the city by taking the mayor, the municipal commissioner and people's representatives into confidence and conducting review meets.
