The Wildlife Society of Orissa has urged the State to take immediate steps to remove the encroachments from forests and wildlife sanctuaries in keeping with the Environment Ministry directive, issued four months ago. Albeit Orissa lost over a lakh hectares in 1995-96, it has, so far, not even constituted monitoring cells for implementing this directive. The WSO alleged that not a single eviction has been carried out in any forest and many DFOs did not know about the circular.
