Orissa finds 27 gold mines

By Akshaya Kumar Sahoo, Bhubaneswar Dec. 16: Orissa, which was hitherto known for its huge mineral reserves like iron ore, bauxite, chrome ore, manganese, dolomite and quartzite, is all set to add a new glitter to its kitty of natural resources. Traces of gold have been found in at least 27 places spread over six districts, most of them in North Orissa. According to the state steel and mines minister, Mr Pradeep Kumar Amat, preliminary survey has revealed gold reserves in Keonjhar, Mayurbhanj, Sundergarh, Malkangiri, Angul and Boudh districts. Speaking to this paper on Tuesday, the minister said at least 18 applications for prospecting of gold in Keonjhar and Mayurbhanj districts are under consideration of the state government. "At least 18 applications have been received for the prospecting of gold. The most meritorious applicants will be given the prospecting licence (PL) as per the prevalent rules," the minister said. In Keonjhar district, gold reserves have been found at Telkoi, Saleikana, Dimirimunda, Kardangi, Kalima, Gajipur, Gopur and Kushakala. In the adjoining Mayurbhanj districts, gold reserves have been found in Sapagara, Barai river basin, Utudihi and Jajuguda. Mr Amat said Samakoi, Tikira river plateau in Angul district and Ram Garh area in Boudh district are expected to have some reserves of gold as per the preliminary information collected by the directorate of geology.
