Alarmed by the rapid disappearance of the State's green cover as many as 17 MLAs have urged Chief Minister, Navin Patnaik to invoke the provisions of National Security Act (NSA) to check the menace of timber smuggling. In a letter to Patnaik, the legislators alleged that every day timber worth Rs 5 crore was being smuggled out of the State whose sylvan wealth had suffered badly during the last super cyclone. They warned that if the present trend of tree falling and smuggling was allowed to continue, a situation may arise when forests would be completely wiped out posing a threat to the livelihood of thousands of tribal, scheduled castes and other backward classes.
