Worried over the continuing plunder of its sylvan wealth, the Orissa Government is likely to step up security in the major forest divisions of the State which house some of the most biodiversity-rich sanctuaries. Sources said the forests with beefed up security might include the Bhaitarkanika and the Similipal sanctuaries. The new security measures would see the forest guards adequately armed for the first time. The Forest Department brass are reportedly upset over the wanton massacre of trees by timber smugglers even in sanctuaries like Chandaka which, lying in the backyard of the State capital.
