With the forest cover depleting at a rapid pace in Orissa, the State Government is planning to launch new measures to check podu chaas (shifting cultivation), considered to be a biggest factor for the depletion of forest cover. As per a study, the total forest cover of the State which was 59,963 square km has been reduced to 56,059 square km in the last one decade due to shifting cultivation.
