Clashes between forest guards and tribals living in and around Similipal biosphere reserve in Orissa are becoming more and more frequent. The stand-off between the two over the issue of alleged encroachment of forest land reached a flashpoint when armed tribals injured six forest officials, sending shockwaves through the officialdom in Mayurbhanj district. Sources said the incident occurred while a team of 32 forest officials led by two assistant conservators of forests were conducting a survey in what is supposed to be an encroached within Similipal which boasts of the only tiger project in the state. Even as the officials were busy with their work, a huge mob of tribals from nearly 200 villages in the encroached area attacked them.
