Over 100 survivors of the Union Carbide disaster on Wednesday kept a candlelight vigil to express solidarity with those opposing the Kudankulam nuclear power project. Five organisations of the survivors of the Union Carbide disaster in Bhopal condemned the brutalities unleashed by Tamil Nadu police and Rapid Action Force on peaceful demonstrators against the Kudankulam nuclear power project. The organisations stated that over half a million people were still suffering from the damages caused by the Bhopal disaster of 1984. The damages caused by a nuclear disaster would be many times more and would be felt for several generations. Bhopal Gas Peedit Nirashrit Pension Bhogi Sangharsh Morcha, Bhopal Gas Peedit Mahila Stationery Karmchari Sangh, Bhopal Gas Peedit Mahila Purush Sangarsh Morcha and Bhopal Group for Information and Action and Children Against Dow Carbide said the unsafe nature of the nuclear project at Kudankulam was evident from the Government’s reluctance to make the Safety Analysis Report and the Site Evaluation Report public despite directives by the Chief Information Commissioner. Holding her responsible for the death of one protestor and injuries suffered by many, the organisations condemned the volte face of the Tamil Nadu Chief Minister who had earlier supported the campaign against the nuclear power project.
