With population explosion in Guwahati city, encroachment of Government land has become a menacing problem and according to a conservative estimate by the Kamrup (Metropolitan) District Administration, more than 7,000 bigha land within the city area is under the grip of encroachers. Though the administration launches eviction drives from time to time, it failed to maintain a sustained drive because of various reasons like shortage of magistrates and police force, inadequate funds, political interference, etc and the failure of the authorities to chalk out a proper plan for using the evicted area resulted in re-encroachment after every subsequent eviction drive. Official sources admitted that the district administration failed to launch a sustained eviction drive because of various factors.
