Over 7,000 families displaced in Sri Lanka due to torrential rains

Disaster Management Centre of Sri Lanka said that over 7,000 families have been displaced due to floods. Also, several areas are in danger with landslides, the Centre added. According to the sources 6,300 families have been displaced in the Mannar district alone. Also, dams of two reservoirs in Mannar have been damaged. Meanwhile, 1,112 families have been displaced in the Negombo area. According to Department of Meteorology Kegalle district reported the highest rain fall for yesterday with 132 mm. Heavy rains have also reported in Trincomalee, Gampaha, Kurunegala, Hambanthota, Mannar, Anuradhapura, Batticaloa, Monaragala, Ratnapura and Badulla districts. Meanwhile, several families have been evacuated from areas in Bibila and Balangoda due to the danger of landslides. A minor landslide affecting over 3.5 acres of land has been reported at Katahara in Hanguranketha yesterday evening. Seven families living in the area have been evacuated to safer palaces.
