The Customs yesterday nabbed a stock of red sandalwood worth over Rs.10 million which was illegally imported to Sri Lanka from India. The Customs official attached to the Import Division made the detection after searching a 40foot container which had been sent from India recently. Assistant Superintendent of Customs Import Division A. L. M. A. Nazeer told the Daily Mirror that the documents related to the container had stated that it contained raw cotton. On suspicion the Customs officials opened the container at the Ceylon Shipping Lines Ltd. Container Yard at Orugodawatta and found a large stock of valuable red sandalwood hidden inside a stock of raw cotton. It is believed that the stock is not merely sent to Sri Lanka but was to be sent to Singapore via Sri Lanka, Mr. Nazeer said. The local Customs had informed the Indian Customs official about the contraband as export of sandalwood is legally prohibited in India. The detected contraband which is estimated at around Rs.10 million will be confiscated. Assistant Superintendent Nazeer is conducting further investigations with the help of Superintendents Chandana Tellahewa and L. M. Jayasekara, Assistant Superintendents Parakrama Jinadasa and R. H. R. W. Kamalasiri.
