Pak won't compromise on Indus water issue

Oct. 18: Pakistan foreign minister Shah Mahmood Qureshi on Saturday said the Pakistan government will never compromise on its share of water from India under the Indus Water Treaty. "We are' aware of the problem and Pakistan will not compromise on the water issue," Mr Qureshi said while addressing a press conference here. About the suspension of water flow in the rivers coming from India and construction of dams on these rivers, the foreign minister said that Pakistan's Indus water commissioner Jamaat Ali Shhas has- left for New Delhi to discuss these issues with Indian officials. The minister said that President Asif Ali Zardari too raised the issue during his meeting with Prime Minister Manmohan Singh on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly in New York. "Dr Singh said India would abide by the (Indus Waters) Treaty and respect its sanctity," Mr Qureshi said.Pakistan has been using diplomatic and all other channels to raise the issue. Pakistan's high commissioner to India had taken up the matter with Indian leaders.
