For the first time in country, private sector, after two-year successful trial based on seven-year field research, have evolved a new variety of "extra long grain hybrid rice with better yield. Prominent scientist Dr Ghulam Mustafa Avesi, who had already developed a total of five new varieties of hybrid rice during the last seven years in collaboration with Yuan Longping Hi of Tech Agriculture Company, China, (the world's largest hybrid rice seed producers). He told APP here on Saturday that after successful trial, the Pakistan Agriculture Research Council (Parc) had cleared the latest variety named "Guard LP3 Rice Hybrid" for commercial cultivation, which was most suitable for better yield in Sindh, Balochistan and some parts of Punjab. He said now in view of its excellent result, the new variety seed had received tremendous response from growers and was being cultivated in lower Sindh on large scale under the supervision of Chinese scientists. Dr Mustafa said that three Chinese Tian Yongjiu, Liu Linhui and Yizhenhua are now engaged in rice seed cultivation in Badin district of Sindh. He said first the time in the history of the country, Guard Agricultural Research and Services, in collaboration with Chinese, had established hybrid seed production in Pakistan. He said that during two years' trial, this variety had produced 90-100 maund rice per acre which, he added, was very encouraging results. He said with the adoption of rice hybrids in place of existing coarse rice varieties, the rice production could be doubled, which could add billions of rupees in the income of rice growers, besides strengthening the national economy. Project Director, Shahzad Ali Malik, after this remarkable achievements of developing five new varieties of hybrid rice in short span of time of seven years. Talking to APP he said that by adopting hybrid rich technology, Pakistan could earn eight to 10 billions dollar through rice export by 2012. He said that last year, rice crop through hybrid techonology was cultivated on more than 150,000 acres of land in Pakistan and growers got double production. He said this year they planned to bring 300,000 acres of land under rice cultivation for surplus production. Shahzad Malik said that Dr Mustafa, who a couple of days ago was conferred "Best Achievement Awards" by Prime Minister Syed Yusuf Raza Gilani in Lahore for developing five new rice varieties, had been actively engaged in rich research with Guard Agricultural Research and Services for the last eight year and contributed a lot towards developing best quality hybrid rice. Regarding the research, he said that one percent increase in temperature resulted in 10 percent decrease in grain production. He said that now it was high time for Pakistan to earn agro-dollars through research-oriented agriculture like Arab countries were earning Petro-dollars through petroleum products and Pakistan had the potential to capture the world market.
