Pune, June 26 This year's Sant Tukaram and Sant Dyaneshwar Palkhis will comprise an ecological purpose in addition to their religious fervour. In an initiative conceptualised by the Directorate of Social Forestry, Maharashtra State, Pune, school students who are a part of the Eco Clubs formed under National Green Corps (NGC) scheme will be distributing seeds to the warkaris and even guiding them about their plantation. The students will be setting up stalls selling packets of seeds, outside their schools between 11 am to 5 pm on June 27 and 28, when the Palkhis will be passing through the district. "This summer vacation, we had directed the students of all Eco Clubs to collect seeds to form a seed bank. The initiative resulted in approximately 100 tonnes of seeds of neem, karanj, bamboo, jamun and tamarind being collected," said Director, Social Forestry, Prakash Thosre. When the warkaris pass through the Pune city, students of the Huzurpaga school on Lakshmi road and New English School, Tilak Road will be distributing seeds through their stalls. On June 29, as the Wari passes through Wadki Nala at the foot of Dive Ghat, students of Sadhana School, Hadapsar and Lonkar School, Mundhwa will be setting up similar stalls. Around 100 odd students who are a part of the Eco Club will also be giving a demonstration on how to plant the seeds and the warkaris participation will be sought. "There is a special need for planting trees especially those like bamboo on the ghats," said Thosre. State Minister of Forests, Babanrao Pachpute will be participating in a tree-plantation programme at Jhendewadi on June 29.
