Panel asks Govt to monitor blasts, mining

The expert committee engaged by the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) to go into the alleged damage caused to the historic Rangghar by the seismic survey carried out by the Oil and Natural Gas Corporation Ltd (ONGCL), has been learnt to have called for a policy of the State Government to regulate blast and mining activities in and around the historic sites. According to information available with this newspaper, the committee has also asked the Government to engage mining experts to ascertain the impact of the ONGCL seismic survey on the Rangghar. The mining experts should also be involved to formulate the policy, it has said. Besides, the committee has suggested that the ASI experts should be involved to prevent further cracks in the monument and the like, goes the information. However, it is learnt that the ONGCL had informed the committee that it had conducted the seismic survey at a distance of 5 km from the Rangghar and the depth of the blast carried out during the survey was also restricted within the permissible limits. Meanwhile archaeology experts here also underlined the need of the steps to regulate blasts sand mining activities in and around the historical sites. The State Government should regulate blasts and mining operations in and around the archaeological sites. For the purpose, it should go for new legal provisions as per the demand of the situation, they said.
