The proposed industrial coastal growth corridor as well as series of Special Economic Zones (SEZs) on the Andhra coast must be stopped immediately to protect the rights of common people, according to the Industrial Coastal Corridor Nirmana Vyat-hireka Porata Samiti. Speakers at the dharna organised by the committee near the district collectorate protesting against the corridor said here on Thursday that the corridor and the SEZs undermined the livelihood of the already marginalised communities. They alleged that lakhs of farm labourers, farmers, fisher folk, artisans, and dalits would suffer if the government did not drop the corridor plan. They demanded immediate scrapping of the GO 34 related to the industrial coastal corridor and SEZ Act of 2005. The speakers pointed out that huge tracts of precious agricultural lands will had to be handed over on a platter to big industrial and corporate houses by the government. They said that this model of development would spell destruction to the under-privileged. Both GO 34 as well as SEZ Act violated the very purpose of the Indian Co-nstitution, they argued. "In particular fisher folk would be the worst sufferers as access to the sea from the land would be denied to them. Apart from it, the costal corridor and SEZs will play havoc with the environment polluting not just the land but also the marine life," said the Samiti convenor, Mr K.S. Chalam. The Porata Samiti is organising an eight-day Jatha from Baruva in Sri-kakulam to Kakinada in East Godavari from April 20 to 27 to create awareness among the public about the ill-effects of the proposed industrial corridor. A public meeting would be held in the city on May 3 against the coastal corridor.
