Remote sensing data is no longer confined to scientific applications. Of late, the data is being used by corporates as a vital MIS (management information system) tool in their decision-making process. In one such application, paper manufacturers have decided to utilise satellite maps developed by NRSA (National Remote Sensing Agency) to identify areas conducive for growth of trees such as Eucalyptus, Subabul, Casuarina, Acacia and Bamboo. In a recent survey conducted by Indian Paper Manufacturers Association (IPMA), its Raw Material Sub Committee indicated that 19 mills registered with it require about 37 lakh metric tonnes (mt) of wood per annum, whereas the available plant material is just 17 lakh mt of wood, leaving a gap of about 20 lakh mt.
