PALAKKAD: The Government will initiate steps to declare the Parambikulam Wildlife Sanctuary as the second tiger reserve in the State by the end of the current financial year, according to Forest Minister Benoy Viswom.
The Minister was speaking after flagging off the four safari buses to the Parambikulam Wildlife Sanctuary at a function held in Aanapady on Tuesday.
He said that the first reserve was the Periyar sanctuary.
The Minister said that the Forest Department would devise a scheme whereby the products of the tribals of Attapadi, Parambikulam, Nelliampathy and the Silent Valley would be marketed so that the adivasi producers get a better price.
He said a marketing company would be set up under the department for this purpose.
To a question on the death of forester K T Rajan at the Forest school in Walayar while on training, the Minister said that training was necessary to update the protection force.
But the department would think of bringing in reforms in the training process so that the older personnel are exempted.
He said that steps were being taken to transfer the Thoothampara estate in Nelliampathy to the Plantation Corporation of Kerala.
The Minister Benoy Viswom said that just as in Vanchivayal of Idukki district where organic farming has been taken up by the Forest Department it would be extended to other areas in the State.
Chief Conservator of Forests(wildlife circle, Palakkad) W S Suiting presided over the meet.
Muthalamada grama panchayat president A Shantha and Aanamalai tiger reserve field director Basavaraju offered felicitations.
