MARGAO: Residents of Comba-Paricotto in Cuncolim on Monday demanded an immediate stop to pollution in the adjoining Cuncolim Industrial Estate and firmly opposed plans to construct a housing project in the ward. The residents demanded that the Cuncolim Municipal Council and the government agencies immediately acquire the plot of land for a playground in public interest, while opposing the housing project tooth and nail. A meeting held on Monday evening, taking cognisance of the fact that the Cuncolim MLA Rajan Naik was absent at the meeting, demanded that the MLA stand by the people and help acquire the land for the proposed ground. They demanded that the MLA use his good offices to convince his government to intervene and stop dust and air pollution in the neighbouring industrial estate. The residents threatened to take a morcha to the residence of the MLA if he fails to support the just and genuine demands. In his address, Adv John Monteiro demanded to know why the resolution adopted by the Cuncolim Municipal Council to acquire the land in question has not been implemented till date. He extended his support to the residents to oppose the housing project and warned the authorities not to take the people for granted. A local resident Sangeeta D’Souza pointed that dust pollution has made life miserable for the residents and demanded an immediate stop to the menace. Other residents echoed similar sentiments, while demanding that the government crack a whip against the erring industrial units.
