Setting an example of sorts in the harmonious development of forests through integrated resource management, a cluster of six villages in Sawai Madhopur district in eastern Rajasthan has adopted a unique-participatory approach for implementing the forestry programme, which has proved the utility of Joint Forest management (JFM) evolved by the State Forest department. Presenting a case study of the Gangwada cluster of Sawai Madhopur district in a national workshop on OECF-assisted forestry projects, the Chief Conservator of Forests, Mr. R.P. Kapoor, and the Conservator of Forests, Mr. A.K. Upadhyaya, highlighted the factors contribution to the successful organisation of JFM and the manner in which the inhibiting factors, such as lack of faith or trust, ignorance, illiteracy, poverty, unequal social structure and ignorance of the staff, were tackled.
