Responding to The Indian Express reports, "UPA mega drinking water scheme is also going down the corruption drain' and "If and where they do get water, it's not safe to drink', published on March 4 and March 5, 2008 respectively, Ministry of Rural Development spokesman S M Khan writes: "The final report of CAG will be finalised only after the response from the concerned states on the specific points pointed out in the draft report is received, the parts of which have been prematurely published by The Indian Express.' Khan has also written that Government is looking into the specific points mentioned in the draft CAG performance audit report and says the Government has given full emphasis on the successful implementation of its drinking water programme. "The report will be finalised after obtaining the comments of the Ministry of Rural Development (Department of Drinking Water Supply) and the concerned state governments. Apart from general comments, there are specific points in respect of 26 states. The matter is being discussed with the State Governments and the points stated in the report are being looked into,' writes Khan. "The comments made by CAG in the draft report have been sent to the respective State Governments for their comments and review meetings are being held,' writes Khan, adding that the Government is providing full emphasis on the successful implementation of the drinking water programme. Express replies: The newspaper did not claim that it was the final CAG report. It was clearly mentioned that it was the draft CAG report.
