This is a village with a difference. People here are illiterate yet know what sustainable development means. They have learnt how important it is to save the local environment in order to progress. Gorchhi, a tiny hamlet in Hisar district of Haryana. Things have been changing ever since the Haryana Forests Department (HFD) took up the community forestry project (HCPF) - a Euro 30 million project partly funded by the European Commission in India (Euro 23.3 mn). Begun in 1998, motivating the villagers wasn't easy. Also, for forestry the right vegetation had to be chosen which would hold the loose sand together. Which is why trees like eucalyptus and sheesham were chosen.
