Civil Aviation Minister Praful Patel on Tuesday said the decision to close existing airports in Hyderabad and Bangalore, after the opening of the new airports, would be reviewed. "As per the contractual agreement, existing airports in the two cities are to be closed, but we will review it,' said the minister on the sidelines of an aviation conference here. Last week, the minister had told the Lok Sabha that the existing airports would be kept operational for defence, VIP and general aviation purposes. The closure of the existing airports has also not gone down well with the Parliamentary Standing Committee, which has recommended that the ministry renegotiate with the private partners. The minister said the new Rajiv Gandhi International Airport at Hyderabad, inaugurated by UPA chairperson Sonia Gandhi on March 14, will start functioning soon. The airport was not allowed to start commercial operations on March 16 after some airlines approached the ministry to first settle certain ground handling issues. The minister also said that the new airports have been asked not to charge User Development Fee (UDF) from domestic passengers initially and rationalise it for short-haul routes. "The UDF can't be the same for short as well as long distances...we will try to reach a solution for the benefit of all. The actual quantum of UDF for domestic and international passengers would be fixed up only after the receipt of final audited project cost from the developers,' Patel said. The new Bengaluru airport has proposed a UDF of Rs 675 for departing domestic and Rs 995 for international passengers while the new Hyderabad airport plans to impose a UDF of Rs 1,000 for international and domestic passengers. The minister also added that the Bill to set up an independent Airport Economic Regulatory Authority would come up in the Parliament this session, soon after the standing committee report was submitted.
