PCB asks hospital to stop activities

Silchar: Pollution Control Board, Assam had instructed Vivekananda Speciality Hospital and Research Centre at Chitta Ranjan Avenue, here to stop its all activities immediately as the Centre had violated the provisions of the law in force causing pollution to the environment and in exercising of power conferred upon it under Section 33 (A) of Water (Prevention and Control of Pollution) Act, 1974 and as amended provisions of Bio-medical Waste (Management Handling ) Rules, 1998.
Member Secretary of the PCB in its order dated March 31 said the activities of the Centre had been causing pollution in the surrounding environment. Further the Centre, reportedly owned and run by a Child Specialist of Silchar Medical College Hospital had been allegedly operating the unit without obtaining Consent to Establish from the PCB. Moreover, the Centre had failed to adopt Bio-medical Waste Management facilities inspite of repeated reminders and show cause notice from the regional office of the PCB.
