Owing to the increasing mobile towers atop residential buildings, schools, hostels and hospitals, the West Bengal Pollution Control Board (WBPCB) has decided that they will not allow indiscriminate installation of mobile towers atop newly planned buildings as the electromagnetic radiation emitted by them are harmful for human body. A guideline (EN/939/T-IV -1/001/2006) was issued on 24 April directing that the base station antennas should be at least three metres away from the nearby building should not face the building directly. Moreover, it also stated that installation of base station antennas in school and hospital premises should be avoided because children and patients are more susceptible to the harmful effects of electromagnetic field. Access to base station antennae sites should be prohibited for general public. Apart from the signboards, clearly visible and identifiable warning signs should be placed at base station antenna sites. "We have passed on this circular to each telecom service provider and we hope that they would abide by the guidelines before putting up a tower," Biswajit Mukherjee, chief law officer of WBPCB, said. After receiving the final nod of approval from the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) the WBPCB has issued a notification mentioning the place where telecom providers should install the mobile towers.mobile
