Pune, August 03 As part of its initiative to make cantonment areas greener, the Pune Cantonment Board (PCB) has organised a mass tree plantation drive on the premises of the Race Course. On August 5, a total of 3,000 saplings will be planted at various spots inside the Race Course premises.
"Students and staff from several schools and organisations respectively from the cantonment zone have been invited to participate in the project, which will be phase two of the board's tree plantation initiative," said S K Sardana, chief executive officer (CEO), PCB.
In the first phase, which was implemented recently, around 1,000 trees were planted in various locations, including Peshwa Marg, Kondhwa Road, Loyd Road and Vikramaditya Marg, said Jayant Kangane, garden overseer, health department, PCB.
"The saplings that will be planted will be of the bush variety as it is not practical to plant trees that will grow to a great height inside the Race Course. The objective is to beautify the Race Course premises and give it a green look," Kangane said. The recently set up Muredha Nallah and Garden ad hoc committee under nominated member Col A K Arora will plan more such initiatives soon, he said.
The PCB will hold a general body meeting on August 6. "Various developmental measures will be discussed at the meeting, such as the creation of more employment opportunities by the board and construction of a sports complex at Golibar Maidan," PCB CEO S K Sardana said. An ad hoc committee that would look into hoardings and advertisements in cantonment areas was set up recently, he said.
