PCMC ready to tackle floods, sets up flood control dept

Just before the commencement of the monsoon, PCMC commissioner Ashish Sharma called for a meeting of various officials to discuss flood control measures recently. People staying near the banks of the rivers Pavna, Mula and Indryani have to face the menace of floods, threatening their life and property. PCMC's action plan 2008 for flood control was presented in the meeting and officials were given various responsibilities. A flood control department has already been established on June 16 at the head office of PCMC in Chinchwad and it will be will be operational round the clock. Seventeen officials have been appointed by PCMC to work for this department. Flood control cells have already been established at the ward level. Officals were also instructed to get the nullahs cleaned, secure megaphone equipment to intimate people in a flood situation, to determine the flood prone areas at the ward level, clean the gutters, survey slums located near riverbanks, remove debris and sand dumped near the riverbanks and establish contacts with garden, electricity and fire brigade departments. A list of numbers of the flood control department that citizens could contact in case of an emergency was released in the meeting.
