Pune, August 25 Even as the mystery behind the deaths of 27 peafowls in Khedkar Wasti near Ranjangaon in Shirur taluka remains unsolved, villagers of Raut Wadi in Shikrapur, about 15 km from Khedkar Wasti, have alleged that unknown miscreants may have killed two peacocks in the region for meat. The villagers suspect that a group of construction labourers working on a water project being implemented by the state government near Raut Wadi may have killed the fowls. Shantaram Raut, a villager, found feathers and some body parts of a peacock in a farm in Raut Wadi last week. Villagers said body parts of another peacock were found in a farm about a month back. No complaint was, however, filed with the police or forest department in the case, they alleged. But now, after the news of mass deaths of peacocks spread in Khedkar Wasti, villagers in Raut Wadi believe some people are hunting for peacocks in the region and have decided to approach forest officials. When contacted sub divisional forest officer S B Raut said that he would be sending his team at Raut Wadi for investigations. Meanwhile, one more peacock was found dead in mysterious circumstances in Khedkar Wasti on Sunday. With this the number of peafowls found dead here in the last four days has reached 28. The forest officers had sent the viscera of dead fowls and samples of food grains and soil around the dead fowls to the Forensic Science Lab (FSL) for tests. "The FSL reports would be available in two weeks. Till then we cannot tell much about the cause of the mass deaths,' said Raut. "There are over 3,000 peafowls in Khedkar Wasti, Morachi Chincholi, Waghale, Lande Wasti, Ranjangaon and Raut Wadi. They used to make much noise in the mornings, but this has reduced drastically in the last few days. We suspect that peafowls are in danger,' a local villager said.
