The `peanut safe syringe' will be available in the commercial market, four years after it was invented.
The state pollution control board (PCB) and the department of health has approved its commercial launch, and its inventor, Dr Baby Manoj, has approached HLL Lifecare for its mass production.
The peanut safe syringe is anew generation syringe that permits multiple procedures in a single patient in single sitting, such as blood aspiration, intravenous and intramuscular injections.
“It has been a long battle for getting the necessary clearance from the pollution control board. According to their norms, the used syringes should be either burnt or crushed. They have multiple options to dispose used syringes but mine was a new technique,“ Dr Manoj said. Applying a slight pressure on the groove located around the syringe's hub would break the needle and barrel of the syringe.
The safe syringe had earned Dr Manoj the best invention of the year award for 2011 from the National Research Development Corporation under the Union ministry of science and technology .
Stringent disposal norms, however, prevented the doctor from marketing the syringe. The state government had appointed a high-level committee to examine if Dr Manoj's disposal technique could be accepted. Based on the committee's recommendations, the pollution control board had given an exemption for the peanut safe syringe. “The peanut safe syringe becomes disabled immediately on use. Neither the syringe nor the needle can be reused. Hence it cannot be channeled to the market again,“ Dr Manoj said.
Dr Manoj's search for a major manufacturing partner took him to HLL. “I already had one round of discussion with the HLL Lifecare when the product was invented. I will be having more discussions with HLL since I have received the clearance,'' he said.
The syringe got its name from the peculiarity of peanut pods, which exposes the nuts--not seen or touched--only when it is broken.Once the nuts are consumed, no one else could have it. The same is the case with Dr Manoj's invention.
