Demanding that the proposed Food Park at Quitol should be scrapped with immediate effect, residents of Betul-Naquerim have resolved that the government should de-notify the proposal to acquire the land for the Food Park and withdraw its notification. The resolution were passed at the recent gram sabha, after residents criticised the government for trying to bring in the project from the backdoor as an industrial estate. Such was the resentment towards the project that residents attending the meeting refused to sign on the register at the beginning of the meeting until the panchayat secretary read out the resolutions to the people. The residents also resolved that the "the illegal acquisition of the prime land belonging to the private parties for auxiliary services for the Food Park, by invoking the urgency clause, should be handed back to the rightful owners by withdrawing the notification and de-notifying the same.' The residents resolved that the government should not take any steps in acquiring land for an industrial estate in Betul-Naquerim village or in neighboring villages, as it would adversely affect the fragile ecology of the place and would cause irrevocable damage to the environment.
