Peta working for animal rights, has demanded that the Alipore Zoo should be closed down by the government for its alleged mishandling of animals. A giraffe died after being electrocuted while being taken from the Alipore zoo to the Nandankanan Zoo in Bhubaneswar. Peta said in a release here that "the Central Zoo Authority (CZA) had threatened to de-recognise the zoo in 2004 for their failure to adhere to the Zoo Rules. In February 2006, Peta had conducted investigations and exposed the abysmal conditions that existed in the zoo and had urged CZA to take strict action against the zoo.' n SNS
