Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas has recently reaffirmed the authorised status of IGL to serve not only the city of Delhi but also its suburbs in NCR. Going ahead with its expansion plan to meet the public demand, the IGL will cover the areas namely Noida, Gurgaon and Faridabad. The decision came following the certain regulatory issues and interpretations put the IGL, a decade-old joint venture company of GAIL, BPCL and Government of NCT of Delhi, expansion on hold due to spiralling prices of other fuel which made consumer to go rapidly on CNG. Over 20 per cent of CNG traffic originates from Delhi's suburb towns and by the order of Delhi High Court, IGL has already started filling CNG inter-state buses of Uttar Pradesh plying across Delhi, Noida, Greater Noida and Ghaziabad and go in the interiors of UP. Haryana City buses also get their CNG fill from IGL stations in Delhi. With local authorities cooperation, the IGL network is expected to be operational this year in Noida and Greater Noida lessening the CNG load in the Capital. Further, IGL would be meeting CNG need of smaller vehicles to some extent through Haryana City Gas as an interim measure by the Supreme Court in the public interest. However, the spread of IGL network as mandated by the apex court for Gurgaon and Faridabad towns would enhance convenience to the public and reduce pressure in NCT. IGL, despite all above constraints, has drawn a massive expansion blueprint to modify the existing CNG stations with high-powered electric driven compressors requiring least maintenance, to refurbish or replace aging machinery, make public filling through new DTC stations.
